Derek’s Tatoos

I smiled when I saw Dawn Mander’s photographic display of old signs

The very same pic as one I’d taken earlier this year!

Derek

Every time I walk past this weather worn sign on Blackpool prom
I recall a good mate, Derek
Eventually took a snapshot and posted it to him

Wonder how many more people
have taken the same pic
with a Derek in mind?

Ah well!
That’s originality down the pan!

South Shore landmarks – long since gone

Mrs Blundell’s, Osborne Road
Leg it to the corner shop for a white sliced and be back home before House of the Rising Sun had finished playing. At just under 5 minutes it was considered too long to be a successful single: in 1964 it reached No 1 and spent 12 weeks in the charts.
South Shore Baptist Church
Sunday best, Sunday School.  Flattened. A car park.
Withnell Road sweet shop
Where sister, Jane, worked at weekends.  Saturday nights watching telly tucking into her “wages”.  A box of sugary Weekend and Terry’s Burnt Chocolate Almonds.  Dr Who, Double your Money, Rawhide, Bonanza, Man in a Suitcase, Littlest Hobo, Skippy … … …
Rock Shop
Pungent peppermint permeating the air.  Allegedly, as a parting gesture, a sacked staff member rattled rock off the production line with two rude words through the centre instead of the customary Blackpool Rock!
Rendezvous Cinema
Saturday morning cartoons.  Swooning at Cliff, “We’re all going on a summer holiday, no more working for a week or two …”
Woolworths
Selling everything anyone could need.

Palladium, Lido Baths, open air pool, sunken gardens, boating lake, deckchairs
All gone

Notarianni survives.  Another of Jane’s weekend jobs.  Knickerbocker Glories.  Glorious!

Blackpool band Kazoobian’s cruel parody of South Shore is harsh, but humorous.
